Why would you need an oversized bed?

Quite frankly, sometimes you just need more space to sleep comfortably. Oversized Beds provide extra length or width (or both), which increases your sleeping surface.

Are you having trouble finding comfortable sleeping positions in a shared bed? Do you have young children who sleep with you? Do you let your pets into be with you? Does your partner move too much at night?

In these (and many other) scenarios, an Oversized Bed would make your sleeping experience less claustrophobic and more refreshing.

The Best Big and Tall Beds

Oversized Beds are also great for individuals who might not fit well into a standard size bed. Larger mattresses and heavy-duty bed frames improve sleep for professional athletes, tall sleepers, and plus size individuals.

In short, Oversized Beds are awesome for:

  • Co-sleeping families
  • Sharing a bed with pets
  • Big and tall people
  • Couples who need more room
  • Sleep partners on different schedules
  • Designers looking to utilize space in a really big room

Square vs Rectangle Shapes

Oversize Beds come in a variety of shapes and sizes. One unique feature of many oversized beds is that they are square-shaped, unlike standard mattresses. The Wyoming King, Alberta King, and Alaskan King beds are all different size squares.

Oversized Beds also come in rectangular shapes. These beds either provide more length (Texas King) or more width (Florida King, Family Bed) than standard beds.

How much room do you need?

One major factor to consider when planning for an Oversized Bed is your room size. Will a super king mattress and bed fit in your space? How much room will you have left once it is in place? And even if this bed will fit in your room, will it fit through the door?

First thing’s first, measure the room. Cross-reference its size with the dimensions of the particular bed (or beds) you have in mind. Then check the width and height of your door frame.

When assembled, will the bed you’ve selected fit through the door frame if you rotate it in any direction? What about when it’s not assembled? How much assembly will you need to do, and do you have the extra space to do it?

How will they deliver your bed?

How will the shipping company deliver your Oversized Bed to your house? How will they package it? How will all this large stuff fit into your house?

Many bed frames and mattresses arrive in pieces across multiple boxes. They require assembly once they’re in your home. This is the best-case scenario for most homes.

The retailer may even provide the size of each package in your order on their website or in the product details. You can also request this information.

At BigBeds.com, we ship out all our bed frames and mattresses in easy-to-assemble component pieces. We package everything to fit comfortably in your home and provide thorough assembly instructions. Big Bed Size Chart Infographic

Wyoming King

Dimensions: 84” wide x 84” long (7 feet x 7 feet)

The Wyoming King is a square-shaped bed. The smallest common square-shaped bed available at 84 inches wide by 84 inches long. The bed is eight inches wider and four inches longer than a regular king size bed.

A Wyoming King Bed offers more space than a regular bed. Because it is more modest than other Oversized Beds, it is a good option for those with limited space. They’re also great for people who want a square bed, but not necessarily a massively one.

The name comes from the 9th largest US state, Wyoming. That is the birthplace of the Wyoming King Bed back in the 1940s.

Texas King

Dimensions: 80” wide x 98” long

Here’s a mandatory reference to everything being bigger in Texas.

A Texas King Bed is basically an extra long king size bed. This is different from the California King, which is longer but narrower than a traditional king. In contrast, the Texas King is four inches wider than a king and a full 18 inches longer. That’s over a foot of additional leg room!

Needless to say, the Texas King is a great option for tall people. Perhaps you want more room to stretch your legs, but are interested in a more traditional bed shape (i.e., not a square). If so, the Texas King Bed is the answer

Alberta King

Dimensions: 96” wide x 96” long (8 feet x 8 feet)

The Alberta King Bed also goes by the name Vermont King Bed. This huge bed measures eight feet by eight feet. Like the Wyoming King, this one is a perfect square. However, you get a whole extra foot of space in both directions.

The Alberta King can easily fit two adults and two-to-three children. A smart choice for families who intend to co-sleep or just hang out in bed sometimes. This bed easily provides enough room to fit a pet or two without ever disturbing (most) adult sleepers.

A room must be at least 13 feet by 13 feet to be able to accommodate an Alberta King size bed.

Florida King

Dimensions: 108″ wide x 80″ long

The Florida King Bed is 80 inches long, or as long as a traditional king size bed. What makes it different is that it’s 108 inches wide. That’s 32 inches wider than a king bed and almost twice as wide as a queen size bed.

Florida King Beds are ideal for co-sleeping, whether that’s with your kids, your pets, or all the above. The Florida King bed is wider than most beds, allowing for more cuddles and comfort without feeling cramped. Even if you don’t co-sleep with a Florida King, the extra room can still provides higher quality sleep for you and your partner.

Because of their usual shape, it can be hard to find a room that can easily fit a Florida King Bed. If you’re interested in one of these wide oversized beds, first measure your room and your other furniture.

Alaskan King

Dimensions: 108” wide x 108” long (9 feet x 9 feet)

The Alaskan King Bed is the biggest king size bed. Like the Wyoming King and Alberta King, it is a square-shaped behemoth that measures nine feet wide by nine feet long. The final boss of Oversized Beds.

Alaskan King Beds are the ultimate oversized sleep solution. Put the Alaskan King vs. any other bed and you’ll satisfy all your needs with plenty of space to spare.

This bed is as wide as the Florida King Bed, which means plenty of space for co-sleeping arrangements. As the longest bed frame on the market, it can comfortably accommodate even the tallest people. Even if you just use your Alaskan King to hang out, having all that extra space for everyone makes a world of difference.

The Alaskan King Bed maximizes space in your bedroom and offers a cozy sleeping area. Get space to sprawl and a luxurious look that adds a sense of elegance and grandeur to your room. A big bed for a big life.
